vSOM Enterprise Plus edition will go into end of availability on 1st February 2019 – Here’s the vSOM upgrade options
On the 8th October VMware announced that the official end of availability for vSphere with Operations Management Enterprise Plus (vSOM ENT+) will be 1st February 2019. After this date, vSOM ENT+ will no longer be available for purchase, the new vSphere products are vSphere Standard, vSphere Enterprise Plus and vSphere Platinum Editions.
What does this mean to existing vSOM Enterprise Plus customers?
VMware reports that from today, October 15th 2018 any current vSOM Enterprise Plus licenses will be upgraded to VMware vSphere Enterprise Plus and VMware vRealize Operations Standard edition, this will however result in an increase to the cost of support and services at the time of renewal for any existing customers. VMware have indicated this will be a small increase in fees however. This will also apply to any new purchases of vSphere with Operations Management Enterprise Plus before the official end of availability on 1st February 2019.
Any customers looking to add Advanced Operations management to the existing or new vSphere licenses following the 1st Feb 2019 deadline will need to purchase vRealize Operations standalone or VMware Cloud Suite.
What are the vSOM upgrade options?
Do nothing – Existing vSphere with Operations Management Enterprise Plus customers can chose to stay on their current vSOM ENT+ licenses, providing their subscription is active and current, support will continue as normal through VMware’s published support period. The product experience will remain the same, however, on the back end, the single vSphere with Operations Management license will be fulfilled by vSphere Enterprise Plus and vRealize Operations Standard licenses.
To entice people to upgrade to the latest premium versions however, VMware are offering some promotional discounts when upgrading to VMware vSphere Platinum and vRealize Suite or vRealize Operations Advanced.
vSOM upgrade to VMware vSphere Platinum
Upgrading to vSphere Platinum, the latest edition of VMware, will enable you to Secure applications, infrastructure, data, and access with the combined capabilities of core vSphere and VMware AppDefense™.
Customers upgrading to vSphere Platinum can:
- Secure applications by leveraging hypervisor and machine learning for authoritative knowledge of application’s intended state
- Orchestrate threat response, reduce the attack surface
- Secure applications, infrastructure, data and access
For customers interested in upgrading to vSphere Platinum, VMware, for a limited time ,are offering a 50% discount when upgrading the vSphere Enterprise Plus component licenses of the vSphere with Operations Management Enterprise Plus bundle to vSphere Platinum.
By upgrading to vSphere Platinum, customers will have vSphere Platinum licenses and existing vRealize Operations Standard licenses.
Upgrade the vRealize Operations component
Customers can upgrade their vRealize Operations Standard licenses of their vSphere with Operations Management Enterprise Plus bundle to VMware vRealize Suite or vRealize Operations Advanced.

VMware are also offering a 50% promotional discount on these upgrades for a limited time.
