Overview
Going through a period of huge growth, Ashmole Academy required a refresh of its ageing infrastructure, in particular around backup and disaster recovery.
Ashmole Academy is a high‑performing 11–19 mixed school based in Southgate, London, supporting more than 1,500 students and a rapidly expanding Sixth Form. As a forward‑thinking academy, Ashmole recognises that resilient IT systems are critical to maintaining a high‑quality learning environment.
Prior to engaging Krome Technologies, the academy was operating on ageing infrastructure with limited disaster recovery capability. Backup processes were fragmented, recovery times were slow, and unplanned downtime was impacting both staff productivity and the student experience.
This disaster recovery case study demonstrates how Krome Technologies delivered a modern, resilient infrastructure platform, enabling rapid recovery, improved reliability and a scalable foundation to support the academy’s continued growth.
“Krome’s expertise in the education sector was hugely important as we have very specific challenges and Krome knew how to address each of these.”
ICT Network Manager, Ashmole AcademyDisaster Recovery Infrastructure & Virtualisation Solution
Krome designed and implemented a consolidated storage, virtualisation and backup platform to eliminate single points of failure and significantly improve system resilience.
The solution introduced centralised Dell SAN storage, virtualised Dell PowerEdge servers running VMware vSphere, and Veeam Backup & Restore. This replaced a complex, tape‑based backup environment and enabled rapid recovery of systems in the event of failure.
Proactive monitoring was implemented using PRTG, with Krome providing remote monitoring and alerting to ensure potential issues were identified early. The deployment was completed during the summer holidays to avoid disruption, with training provided to ensure the internal IT team could confidently manage and maximise the new platform.
