Storage Virtualisation Case Study: HTA Design

Overview

Improving performance and productivity through a modern virtualised infrastructure for a leading architectural consultancy.

HTA Design is a multi‑disciplinary architectural and design consultancy delivering complex residential and urban design projects across the UK and internationally. With over 100 designers relying on graphics‑intensive applications, the business depends on high‑performance IT systems to support day‑to‑day design productivity.

As project workloads increased, HTA’s legacy infrastructure began to show signs of strain. An ageing storage environment and under‑utilised physical servers were impacting performance, with slow access to large CAD files affecting the efficiency of design teams.

Krome Technologies was engaged to modernise HTA’s infrastructure and implement a more efficient, scalable solution. This virtualisation case study demonstrates how Krome delivered a high‑performance, resilient environment that significantly improved system performance and simplified management.

Virtualised Infrastructure & Storage Optimisation

As part of this virtualised infrastructure case study, Krome designed and implemented a consolidated VMware‑based virtual environment, replacing HTA’s legacy physical server estate.

Twelve under‑utilised physical servers were consolidated into a streamlined virtual platform, supported by a new iSCSI SAN solution. The introduction of centralised storage and virtualisation significantly improved system performance, while simplifying ongoing management and reducing resource overhead.

The solution also incorporated advanced backup and replication capabilities, enabling faster recovery and improved data protection. With the ability to scale both storage and compute resources, HTA now has a flexible platform capable of supporting future growth and increasingly demanding design workloads.
