Overview
An education IT infrastructure refresh case study showing how modernised systems and classroom technology supported school expansion and improved learning environments.
The Westgate School is a high‑performing secondary and sixth form academy in Slough, supporting around 930 students aged 11–19. With a strong reputation for academic progress and high‑quality teaching, the school continues to invest in facilities and technology that enhance the learning experience.
Following the completion of a major building expansion, Westgate required a comprehensive IT infrastructure refresh to support new classrooms, ICT suites and learning spaces. The school’s existing infrastructure was ageing, close to capacity and difficult to scale, limiting its ability to support growth and modern teaching methods.
This IT Infrastructure Refresh Case Study demonstrates how Krome Technologies modernised Westgate’s core systems and learning technologies, delivering a stable, scalable platform that supports both educational outcomes and long‑term growth.
With a recent building expansion completed, the Westgate Secondary School required a technology refresh via an upgraded infrastructure, modernising the school’s technology environment and enhancing the facilities further.
Technology integrator Krome Technologies supplied and installed a range of new equipment including a storage & backup solution, a virtualised server estate using VMware, desktop PCs, digital signage & SMART boards.
“Having worked with Krome previously, we have always been impressed with their technical ability and flexible working ethos.”
IT Manager, The Westgate SchoolIT Infrastructure & School Technology Modernisation
As part of this school IT modernisation case study, Krome designed and delivered a modern, virtualised server and storage environment capable of supporting the school’s expansion while remaining simple to manage with limited internal IT resources.
Legacy physical servers were replaced with a consolidated VMware virtual environment running on new Dell servers, supported by replicated Dell SAN storage. This improved system resilience, performance and scalability while reducing management overhead and hardware costs.
Alongside the core education IT infrastructure refresh, Krome also delivered significant classroom technology upgrades, including 182 new desktop PCs, SMART interactive whiteboards and digital signage across the school. The entire project was completed within a fixed timeframe, ensuring the new environment was fully operational for the start of the academic term with no disruption to staff or students.
