Working in partnership with Bupa, as part of their ongoing global tech refresh programme, Krome has also been helping them to donate their used laptops to classrooms in Malawi, Africa, via the Turing Trust.

The circular economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products, such as laptop devices, as long as possible.

To date, thanks to Bupa’s laptop donations and Krome’s work, sustainably preparing, securely wiping data, cleaning and packaging laptops for delivery, we have now been able to install 1,514 laptops into classrooms in Malawi, Africa, enabling 27,252 more students to learn vital IT skills.

Beyond this, the environmental impact from these donations will offset 423 tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is the equivalent of planting 1059 trees, or offsetting the annual carbon footprints of 43 Britons. In addition, the embodied energy savings created are also enough to power 103 UK homes for a year.

The Turing Trust honours Alan Turing, the scientist who is regarded by many as the founder of modern computer science. Alans’s ability to crack the Enigma code shortened World War II by an estimated 2-3 years, a further 14 – 21 million lives were saved. The trust provides computers to those who need them most. Contributing to the circular economy by reusing IT equipment both in the UK and in Africa, supporting education and teacher training whilst offsetting carbon emissions.

For every computer that we install via our Turing Trust charity partnership, the “Africa schools’ program” enables 18 students a chance to develop their digital skills.

Alongside Malawi schools, a selection of UK charities also benefits annually from our extra donations via the Turing Trust.
