Microsoft SQL Server 2005 – Extended support now expired

In addition to the end of Microsoft Lync 2010 support, April 12th was also the final end of life date for Microsoft SQL Server 2005, which has been in an ‘extended support’ period since April 2011.

The end of the support will mean no further security patches are released for the product, however companies who have taken out Microsoft Premier Support contracts will have special arrangements in place as part of their agreements, similar to those offered when Microsoft retired Windows XP.

Microsoft has stated that SQL Server 2005 can be upgraded to SQL Server 2014 in-place of the 2005 edition, providing 2005 isn’t a 32-bit edition of the product. For clients looking to move to a cloud environment, Microsoft Azure SQL Database v12 offers “near complete compatability” with the stand-alone SQL Server product. If you are one of many organisations with an installation of SQL Server 2005, now is the time to develop your migration plan.
