Most “restores” in this day and age are undertaken from SnapShots taken within SAN arrays, rather than from backup solutions, as they were only a decade ago. Actually having to revert to restoring data from backups is a lot less common than it used to be, but it is imperative that the right solution is sized and deployed for the right client; one size does not fit all.

When looking at backup solutions, we must address the required RPO (recovery point objective) and RTO (recovery time objective), as it is all well and good backing up our data, but it is how quickly we can restore the data and how much of a window of “lost data” can we suffer that is the crux of the situation.
